Originally beginning as a single-room general practice in 1991, O’Brien Street General Practice has grown to a five-room general practice accommodating eight part-time GPs. The environment is relaxed and calming that feels less like a medical practice and more like a safe and caring space.

While we offer a full range of general practice services, we also focus on a number of specialised areas that makes our practice different from most. For more information click the Services tab.

We are also a teaching practice in co-operation with the University of Adelaide & Flinders University Medical Schools.

O’Brien Street Practice is fully accredited by Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL). AGPAL operates nationally and provides accreditation services to over 85% of general practices in Australia.

AGPAL is the leading provider of quality improvement that supports primary care practice teams to increase efficiency, reduce risk and stay current with trends and best practice.

What happens if I need to see a doctor out of business hours?
We have an arrangement with a locum service, ‘Home Doctor Service" who can be contacted by phone when we are closed. Their number is 137425 and this number is also incorporated in our answering machine message should you ring outside of business hours. Ths service is available from 4pm weekdays, 10am saturdays and all day Sundays and Public holidays. This service is bulk billed.

I’ve left a message for my GP—when will they contact me?
We take a lot of messages for our GPs throughout the day and the general rule is that they will attend to and reply at their earliest convenience.

I have chest pains or suspect that I may have had a stroke—what should I do?
If you are experiencing chest pains, you should go straight to emergency at your nearest hospital as they are equipped with the expertise to diagnose and treat you.

Why do I have to see my GP for repeat prescriptions, referrals and for forms to be filled in?
We are committed to patient care and we do not provide prescriptions or referrals without seeing you in a consultation. Any prescription medication needs to be monitored and we insist on this policy for your protection and wellbeing.

When you make an appointment just to obtain a repeat script, the doctor will bulk-bill the visit. If you request a repeat script and don't see the doctor, you will be charged a $15 script fee.

If you have a form that needs to be filled in i.e Centrelink we need you to make a time to come and see the doctor- these forms require the doctor checking your medical history to fill them out correctly and takes time for which the doctor should be paid rather than doing so in their own time. It also ensures that you are happy with the information being filled in and gives you a chance to discuss it.

O’Brien Street Practice is a privately operated clinic. We request that all patients settle their accounts at the end of their consultation. We accept all major credit cards, with the exception of American Express. EFTPOS facility is also available for payment via our TYRO terminal. With this facility, we can process the full payment via credit card or EFTPOS, then by transmitting the receipt to Medicare electronically, re-swipe your card and have the Medicare rebate transferred to either your savings or cheque account.

TYRO cannot refund your Medicare rebate into a credit facility- it must be either savings or cheque. If you wish to receive your Medicare rebate as a cheque in the mail, we can still arrange this for you.

If you wish to pay only the gap on your visit, this will cost you $35 and it is your responsibility to forward the Medicare cheque for the rest of the payment to us.

By paying your account in full at the time of the consultation, the difference between what Medicare pays and what we charge as a discounted account is $25, so it is slightly cheaper for you to pay in full at the time of the consultation.

Bulk billing is available for concession cardholders and children under 16 for medical services. Please present your current concession card to reception for this service.

Our fees for non-concession cardholders are as follows:

From 1 July 2014

TYPE OF CONSULT Full Fee Discount Fee Paid on Day Medicare Rebate
Level B Consult $72.05 $62.05 $37.05
Level C Consult $106.70 $96.70 $71.70
Level D Consult $140.55 $130.55 $105.55

Please note that fees are calculated on the actual duration and content of a consultation rather than the length of appointment booked. For surgical procedures the Schedule Fee is usually charged and Medicare rebates 85%.

Pathology tests in this practice are usually sent to SA Pathology. If you sign the pathology Medicare form, the laboratory will charge no further fee. When you are referred for radiological investigations or specialist opinion you are advised to contact the provider in advance about the fees to be charged.

For new patients, we allow half an hour for the initial appointment: this enables both you and your doctor time to discuss your history.

Missed appointments and cancellations
First-time late cancellations or missed appointments receive a warning by phone followed by an explanatory letter. Any subsequent instances will result in a bill.

20 minute appt- $60.00

30 minute appt- $95.00

40+ minute appt- $130.00

These charges are not claimable through Medicare.

If you have elected to receive SMS reminders for your appointments, you are required to accept the appointment when reminded by SMS by either typing Yes to keep or No to decline. Failure to confirm by this method will result in the appointment being removed and given to another patient.

This charge is not reimbursable by Medicare as it is not a medical service.

No further appointments will be made until the outstanding amount has been paid.

If you are unable to keep your appointment, we require at least four hours notice in advance so that we can use the appointment time for another patient. If you need to cancel an appointment outside of business hours, a message can be left on our answering machine.

Transfer of notes to another Practice

Medical notes are released to another Practice upon receipt of a signed release on Practice letterhead. They are sent via registered post as per  RACGP Standards for General Practice and a fee for this request is charged at the discretion of the treating GP. A brief medical summary is sent to another GP practice at no charge.
